welcome to the new year......everybody. its hard to look back on the beginning of this century with more than a decade already behind us. twelve years old, bah, humbug as for some of us it will be lights out in just a few more of these decades. others are just getting started. well get busy, and that's the only encouragement i have to offer you. over the holidays i read a rather extensive biography on Johannes Brahms segueing into the Steve Jobs. both could be wholly obnoxious people, but i would have stood a better chance listening to Brahms explain to me my miserable incompetent existence than Steve. i know, to compare a musical genius to Steve makes no sense, particularly when i belong to the non-Mac club and have a hard time treating my PC with any respect as it is. the coming up of technology for me has been a race that has winded me a bit if not many bits later. i did not adopt it with the same glee as some of my colleagues who have learned to work their Macs or PCs from the beginning as though they were riffing on a new sax. all that being said, It is the Wozniaks of the world who seem to come closer to what Brahms was doing, but I don't know shit. I'm a musician and that's the long and the short of that one. And with this year 2012, i will go on trying to be that and just that.........singing about it....writing about it.......while doodling about on the piano. yours truly, peter

i bought some good scotch for tonight's occasion. 2011 was pretty good all things considered, so i won't drink to wash away the pain. that in itself is worth celebrating. its more like the spirit of Thanksgiving the one american holiday that refuses to be commercialized beyond recognition. about giving thanks (even though we slaughtered hundreds of tribes of american indians and stole their land we still cekebrate having had lunch with them) and i think that's what the scotch is for. i am grateful to have lived what i lived this year. grateful to those who came out to the shows, grateful to those behind the scenes, and most grateful that i can still write a good song when i put my heart and mind to it. no, i am not getting soft. old perhaps, but not soft......i like to drink....and some of you know that.......take care everybody. there will be plenty of surprises this year. i just feel it.

the sidewalks are being tested in Paris like i have never seen them before. foot traffic without anyone directing is always a question of negociation in this town, but with christmas a week away its way out of control. wide=eyed shoppers with 180 degree blind spots busting out of stores, bags swinging in hand, the other firmly attached to a cell phone. lovers stopping mid-sentence to embrace (or rather make out) right in the smack dab middle tongues lashing blocking everyone's path for much longer than seems possible considering the circulation. i occasionally pass an old timer with a cane, sometimes two walking together. they seem to go about as if it were just another day of window shopping. i like old people (hell, i am one), so i try to make eye contact, but they are as guilty as the rest of us glued to the store windows or some decoration that glitters back at them. its often said that christmas is a holiday for the kids. that's a good excuse if you are looking for one.......the idea, at least i think the idea, is to spread good cheer. that and a hot toddy and you can count me in. 'merry'........ peter

i have already bought my Time magazine end of the year review. it was entirely read, appreciated for its timelessness, and lost somewhere here in the house. Avatar was there, the BP oil leak, Wikileaks, and so many others. I can't remember everyone of note who died, but they were all there too, filling the pages with emotion and a notion that time is fleeting at best; no point in getting worked up about it. you may have already sensed that i belong to that group of people who has a bit of trouble celebrating the end of any year. its right up there with birthdays and any other bright idea of how to mark time. granted, the Times Square celebration still has some punch, but i have come to need a bit more to celebrate than nostalgia or just another year in the making.

i already consider myself extremely lucky each morning just to wake up breathing, to have people in my life that give meaning, a sense of purpose (it comes and goes that one), and melody that still satisfies the soul if i manage to get it down right. so, there's already plenty to celebrate. but if i had to get out tonight to hoop and holler, i would undoubtedly wear a paper party hat and shake a noisemaker in someone's face, while most probably wondering what it would feel like to know a long wet kiss from the girl next to me. its new years eve....what the hell......and one way or another i will celebrate life every chance i get. so let's get to it.

been a while since i last checked in with you. a bit of the panic mode set in the beginning of november. the realization that i had a good thirty or so songs to rearrange, prepare, log into my memory banks with only seven days of rehearsal in january left me a bit breathless (more of a state of shock). suppose its to be expected. turns out that anna and i willl be coming into town the same day and going straight to the rehearsal hall, no passing Go, don't collect 200 dollars. but now that we are into the second week of december already i think i can say a little more confidently that the show will be a good one with lots of drama, and lots of groove, with songs that some of you may have forgotton (me too).

most everyone is wondering where this new unrest in France will lead to; an explosion of some sort, most probably. the french have an expression for those who try to hide the truth....something that concerns 'drowning the fish', and i must say, that despite my deepening incomprehension of what's really going on, i am at least enjoying the politicians (as well as union leaders) drown their respective fish. all this is fun for outsiders to watch, but of no great concern when compared to the new laws they have passed in Arizona (where i was born), Virginia (most beautiful state in the union), Tennessee (still have friends in Nashville), and Gerogia (coolest deep south american accent). i'm not a gun totin' american, and i do my best to respect those who do, but in four states of the union you can go into a bar, order a drink, get sloshed, i am just guessing, and have no other friend to talk to but the gun that's handily tied to your person. as i am not in the states at the moment, i am trying to imagine the table talk, the jokes, the debates (as if this merited a debate). the rebuttal to this is the bar owners who do not want guns in their bar can post a 'no handguns allowed on the premises' sign at the cost of losing a little business. go america...show 'em who's boss.

finished another new arrangement of 'just around the corner' this afternoon. yet another. this one is for a live television show, and i just had to try something new. beginning to wonder if a tango version of it might be in my future somewhere. don't mind. always liked the change from the D major to the F# minor. don't care whose song its in. after a quick mix (i obviously don't care that much about television) i found myself later in china town. a great place to go, if you don't feel like being in Paris for a while, even if its located in the city's 13th district. hard not to compare it to china town near downtown los angeles. cock robin played there once or twice. it always ended late with the inevitable packing up of the gear. i think it was there that i decided to become a bass player one day so that i would not have as much gear to pack up. the new arrangement of 'corner' is with an acoustic guitar. i will get in and out with it, guitar no more than a heavy briefcase.

cyndi would have been the bonus track. to hear her belly laugh and swift parle up close would have done me good. as it was, i got within touching distance but didn't get in a hello, nor even a nudge. as my other reason for going to 'the kube' hotel was to be with Aline the journalist from Europe 1. a real beauty, lots of light in the eyes, and like Cyndi, full of charm. she had invited me to sit in on the interview she was doing with Cyndi and check out the hotel (funky branche). another great unexpected treat was Bruno Evans (might have the last name wrong) who was spinning records for those of us lucky enough to have been in his presence.

i won't mention that name of the song. suppose that that would spoil it. anyway, there are other things to say about this new album. for instance, its a bit of a joke the title of it. as the songs were not written in a 'bell tower' at all. i had the upstairs apartment from anna when we were waiting between tour dates in Paris. the stairs up to my room were circular (hard as hell to get a keyboard case up them) and could have well been home to Quasimodo on his way up to ring the bells of Notre Dame. the hotel was cool, and for anna and i, we made it into our home away from home.

he wouldn't have been nearly so funny had Kadafy not been the speaker to have followed a very eloquent and stirring speech by Barrack Obama.
We felt bad for Barrack, but in Kadafy's own way he sort of upstaged Barrack. not easy to do that, though the
Republican Party keeps trying. i'm not laughing nearly as hard at their insanity. But then i always get a tear going when i see anything on the Civil War in the early days of the United States. Brother against brother.......tears your heart out. must be the rain. its really starting to come down now.

He was young. Hard to tell though, because he was headless. Headless in the way we used to do as kids; the jacket zipped up over the head with arms tucked in, empty sleeves flapping with twists and turns of the body. running at someone with one’s best scary voice wailing. More of a headless character on Scooby Doo than anything really frightening. he wasn’t running at anyone. he just sat on the sidewalk alone with his back against the wall of Monoprix, headless. An empty pack of Leffe at his side.

He even told me that there was a factory in Shanghai and that to have one of these cars in China was the ultimate in comfort and dependability. all that being said he had to mention that the french had never caught on to it. i was happy that my hat brought back some good souvenirs for him, and i was starting to be a little less wonderous as to why i was in France once more.
